A Time to be Born
Tammi Michelle Porter was born on May 31, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to her parents, Gerald and Jonetta. She was the first of their two children. Her two brothers, Gerald Jr. and Benjamin Jermaine Cockroft preceded her in death.
A Time to Grow
Tammi, the only daughter of the family for many years, was truly pampered. In her young adult life, Tammi accepted Jesus as her Savior. She had a kind heart, mild manner, and polite but often a feisty passionate disposition. Tammi was thoughtful, and she always had a smile for everyone.
Tammi graduated from Henry Ford High School in 1986. Her passion to help others led her to seek a career in nursing. She furthered her education at Wayne County Community College, where she received a Liberal Arts degree in 2000. She attended James Moore School of Health, graduating in 2007 with a nursing diploma and license for practical nursing (LPN). She worked as a nursing assistant at Detroit Receiving Hospital from 1998 to 2008 and as an LPN at the Veterans Hospital of Detroit until 2013, when her diabetes forced her into disability. Despite her illness, Tammi would not relinquish her deep passion to be of service. She joined MI Dept of Health/Human Services "Freedom to Work" which allowed her to continue in her profession in various nursing homes throughout the Metro Detroit area. She often accepted double shifts during the height of the COVID pandemic until her diabetes became life-threatening in August 2021.
A Time to Love
Tammi held a tremendous love for her family, relatives and friends. But the love of her life and Tammi's "world" revolved around her son, Terran. As a single mother, she worked tirelessly to provide for him.
A Time to Live
Tammi was a woman of many talents, she was a fashionista, who was fondly known as Ms. Diva by many. Those who knew Tammi well, knew of her fire and passion; she would be quick to say "Don't get it twisted," yet she was a generous giver. She would not hesitate to buy gifts for anyone. Tammi's passionate love extended beyond her family--she extended love to the atmosphere in which she lived and worked.
A Time to Transition
Tammi transitioned from earth to eternity on April 15, 2022. She leaves to rejoice in her legacy: her son, Terran; her parents, Benjamin and Jonetta Cockroft and father, Gerald Porter (Cheryl); aunts, Pearline, Barbara, Ola, Marilene, Mazal, and Cheryl; uncles Napoleon, Woodrow, Frank, Glenn, and Edmond; cousins, Melaundra, Camille, Nicole, Delila, Patricia, Lynn, Lisa, Edward, Emmanuel, Melvin (Gladys), and Vincent; nieces Breyonna, Engree and Takira; nephews, Will and Bakari; BFF's: Sharon, Cassandra, Connie, and Tricia and a host of other relatives and friends.
