SCARPONE (nee Harwood) Margaret "Peggy" Elizabeth, age 96, a long-time resident of Southfield, Michigan peacefully passed on to eternal life at home on August 10, 2020. She was born on April 28, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan and was the beautiful and devoted daughter of Fred A. and Margaret M. Harwood (nee Monk). Peggy had one sister, Doris Eileen, whom she loved dearly. Peggy grew up in Detroit where she attended Barbour Intermediate School and East Commerce High School from which she graduated in January, 1942. She graduated a semester early so that she could go to work to help support her mother, her younger sister, and herself as, tragically, her father passed away when she was just 4 years of age. She was employed by Maccabees Mutual Life Insurance Company where she met her husband Marino "Gene" Scarpone. While raising their seven children, Peggy volunteered countless hours at their schools and worked tirelessly on every committee imaginable, including being PTA President, Keep Southfield Beautiful President, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and Sunday School teacher. Eventually, she went back to school to obtain her college degree in accounting, graduating a week after her youngest child graduated from college. Peggy went on to be the manager of Detroit Marathon Employees Credit Union and later worked as a loan officer and mortgage specialist, as well as on special projects at SOC Credit Union (later Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union). She was blessed with a quick and sharp mind and enjoyed working well into her 80's, however, the role she treasured most was that of mother to her seven children ("The Seven J's"). Peggy was a loving, devoted, and selfless mother. Her family was her life and spending time with loved ones brought her much joy. She was a blessing in their lives. Her grandchildren were a great source of happiness and she loved to visit with them and hear about what they were doing. Peggy was a loyal and caring friend to all who knew her and her concern for others was matched by her compassion. She loved watching and feeding her birds, chipmunks, squirrels, and deer, and she enjoyed reading, games, puzzles, cooking, gardening, nibbling on dark chocolate, and lovingly serving others. Peggy was a huge Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons fan and watched as many games as she could. She was known to make phone calls to her children and grandchildren during the games after particularly good plays made by the various sports teams. She will be remembered as a humble, kind, and generous woman who always put the needs of others before her own. Peggy will be forever missed and eternally loved. Left to cherish her memory are her children Dr. Charles Aylsworth of Holt, James (Kimberly) Scarpone of Buchanan, Jeanne (Denny) Fritch of Tinley Park, IL, John Scarpone of Oak Park, Jerold Scarpone of Southfield, Joanne (Frank) Duffner of Center Line, and Janet (Dr. John) Robertson of Northville; her grandchildren Adam (Becky) Cooper, Blake Cooper, Creighton (Michelle) Scarpone, Elizabeth (Brian) Waters, Brendan (Janelle) Scarpone, Katherine Robertson, and William Robertson; her great-grandchildren Mason, Dane, Elliott, Elise, and Sophia; several nieces and nephews as well as many dear friends. Peggy was preceded in death by her father (1928), her mother (1982), her sister (1943), her good friend and father of her children Marino G. Scarpone (2013), and her beloved first-born child Jane Scarpone Aylsworth (2016). A private funeral will take place on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 and Peggy will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Detroit alongside her mother and sister.
