Obituary

During the quiet of the morning, Lucy departed this world in the presence of her brother and sister for a new venture, a place surrounded by angels. At the golden age of 95, her date of departure was on the day of our Lord, February 23rd, 2023. Lucy was the 7th of 14 children born to Dan J. and Katie P. Carter on July 10, 1927. Born to a rather harsh life she set out on her own and moved from her hometown to Ensley, Alabama where she became employed as a nurse's assistant. She was soon joined by her mother and her baby sister and took on the responsibility of being a second mother to her sister, Emma. She sacrificed her youth and her time making sure they were provided for, while always keeping a positive and kind spirit. The family soon moved to Detroit in search of a better economic life. As a strong believer in God, Lucy was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic church in 1959 and was a member of St. Agnes in Detroit for many years.

You could always find Lucy deep into reading a book or assembling the most complex jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Lucy's passion for reading began when her former teacher gave her a book by Shakespeare and the rest was history. With her background in medicine and love for her family, she continued to assist her relatives dealing with various illnesses. Her home became a safe haven for her younger brothers and often for her older sisters. She was undoubtedly a woman with high spiritual and moral values exemplified by her loving and caring spirit. She was small in stature but stood as a giant when fighting against injustices. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Katie, her brothers, Dan Jr, Howard, Nathaniel, Marvell, Thomas, and sisters, Mary Willie Smith, Rose Lee Logan, Katie Stallworth, Daisy Carter, and Bessie Anderson. She leaves behind her brothers, Robert (Freeda) Carter, Clevell Carter, and William (Bo) Carter, and sister, Emma Carter; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
