Kerry Mona Tatem was born May 5, 1932 in Spot Bay Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands, to Donald and Geneva Hurlston.
Kerry accepted Christ at a young age and, while she was in high school in Cayman Brac, decided that she wanted to become a missionary to spread the gospel and see the world. She wanted to come to the United States to prepare for this endeavor. She left for the US in 1954 to attend Zion College. After attending Zion for two years, she met Samuel S. Tatem, a student from the Turks and Caicos Islands, who was studying to become a pastor. She was joined in holy matrimony to Samuel on December 23, 1956. Kerry and Samuel decided together that there was enough mission work to do in the United States.
Kerry worked with Samuel as one team in United Methodist Churches in Georgia, Maryland, New York and Michigan for more than 36 years until his death in 1993. During this period they served at 10 churches and raised six children together. Her children developed a love of mathematics and science because she passed on her passion for the arts and sciences by tutoring her children in their primary school years. This resulted in three children becoming engineers, and three children becoming doctors. She loved to entertain, and Sundays and holidays with guests or just family were always magnificent formal events. Later in her life she pursued her desire see the world and traveled throughout North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and the Pacific, and worshiped in the house of God in every place that she visited.
Kerry departed this life on September 15, 2016. She leaves to cherish her memories six children (Samuel III, Lewis, Edward, Edwin, Weston and Geneva), four daughters-in-law (Marcia, Linda, Milagros and Margie), eight grandchildren (Kerry, Megan, Geneva, Edward, Samuel IV, Estevan, Isabela and Alma), a beloved niece Beatrice, dear nephews Audley Scott (Shirley-Ann), David Hurlston (Jennylee) and Warren Hurlston, a special godson Ryan Johnson, as well as a host of additional nephews, aunts, nieces, cousins and friends.
