Jess Eugene James (affectionately known as "Uncle" and "Brother") transitioned peacefully at his home in Southfield, Michigan at the age of 97, after a hard-fought battle.

Jess was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi to Jessie and Clarice James. After moving to Detroit, Michigan with his family, he graduated from Northwestern High School. He served in the US Army during World War II without missing a day. During his three-year military term, Officer James was also stationed overseas in England. Upon honorary discharge he earned several awards including The Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal.

After the war Jess returned home and began working for the Detroit Police Department. He was responsible for accounts receivable and mail circulation. Again, he never missed a day and received several promotions including being assigned Supervisor.

In his spare time Jess was devoted to baseball. For years he played on several local hardball teams. After retiring from the Detroit Police Department, he studied baseball through written concepts. Then he used his playing experience and acquired book knowledge to effectively serve as coach for Detroit youth baseball teams. Jess started his coaching career in 1971 with the Kronk Church Baseball League. During his tenure as a baseball coach, he received many accolades for coaching and serving as a role model.

As the head coach of The Kronk Cubs, he led teams to several league and two national championships. In 1974 Coach James won The Pee Wee Reese World Series National Championship, and that team was #1 in the United States of America. After his career with Kronk, Coach James joined The Detroit Yankees Youth Baseball Organization where he helped develop young men and participated in leading them to several championships.  Jess James was a proven winner with the goal of giving back to the community and developing well-mannered men who would become positive contributing citizens. Several players he coached received athletic scholarships to colleges and earned degrees.

Mr. James lived in a senior apartment complex where he attended social gatherings and became acquainted with other residents. He was proud to serve as president of the Tenant Association.

In addition to his friendships and joining social gatherings , Jess loved photography, jazz music, and was passionate about current events. During holidays at the dinner table, he would discuss and debate politics with family members, especially his nieces and nephews.

Jess is survived by four siblings, Margaret Mitchell, Willa Knight, Leroy James, and Allen James (Ophelia). He is preceded by his wife Ethel James, son Keith James, mother Clarice James, father Jessie James, his brother Robert McDaniel, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
