Whitfield was born April 15, 1957 in Detroit, Michigan. She would be the first of three children
born to the union of Samuel Whitfield and Ernestine Whitfield (deceased).
Electa began her early education in Kaiserslautern, Germany on the U. S. Army base where her father
was stationed. Once the family returned stateside to Detroit, Michigan, she would attend Doty
Elementary. Later, when the family moved to Inkster, Michigan, Electa would attend Carter G. Woodson
Elementary, Fellrath Junior High School, and Inkster High School. The remaining two years of her
secondary education were completed at Immaculata High School in Detroit where she would graduate
in 1974 at the top of her class with the distinction of receiving high honors. Her high honor awards
would sit alongside others bestowed throughout her academic career. These would include literary
awards for short stories and essays, ribbons for being on the Honor Roll, and a plaque noting her
induction into the National Honor Society.
After high school Electa would study at Wayne State University until she entered the workforce in the
field of emergency medicine. She would remain in this line of work for 25+ years. Electa held numerous
positions from 911 Operator to becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Outside of being an
EMT on "the truck", she would also be an EMT on staff at hospitals. She would teach EMT classes at
community colleges in an out of the metropolitan area. In more recent years, she worked at various
doctor's offices. Once her career as a medical professional concluded, and she opted for a more relaxed
work environment, her final place of employment would be at Eberspacher, a local plant in Brighton, MI
where she worked as a production team member.
Electa had other loves beyond that of emergency medicine. She appreciated nature and being in the
outdoors. She enjoyed hiking, camping, and white-water rafting. Often times, she would travel with
friends on trips that included these activities. In addition to relishing nature and being outdoors, Electa
was an avid reader. She began devouring books at a very young age. She read so extensively she would
test out of her class level throughout her school years. She enjoyed reading the classics,
mysteries/thrillers, historical and science fiction. She would delve into nonfiction as well, consuming
books on medicine, politics, and history. However, as much as she loved books, she had an even deeper
passion for listening to music. Electa was downright obsessed with this pastime. This love affair would
span across music genres – from Stevie Wonder to Stevie Nicks. She enjoyed everything from straight
ahead jazz, to R&B, to gospel, to soft and hard rock. She joined fan clubs, stood in long lines for concert
tickets, and waited around after shows with the hope of obtaining autographs. The concerts she
attended were of her favorites: Three Dog Night; Earth, Wind, & Fire; Chicago; The Doobie Brothers;
Parliament/Funkadelic; and Luther Vandross...just to name a few.
However, as much as she enjoyed her work, reading, and music - nothing was more important to her
than her family. She loved and cherished them all very deeply. In fact, just days prior to her passing she
made the statement, "See...this is what I love most, spending time with my siblings just hanging out."
Electa was preceded in death by her mother Ernestine Whitfield. She is survived by her parents, retired
Maj. Samuel D. Whitfield and Dorothy A. Whitfield, her siblings, Boyd (Camile), Carole (Ivory), Tamara,
Warren, Anginette, DeAnne, and Jeremy, her beloved nephews, Delues, Matthew, Kamal, and Jah-Zion,
and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and close friends.
