Dorothy Weiss Somerville

Dorothy Somerville born Dorothy Lee Weiss on May 1, 1924, in Detroit Michigan to Gus Weiss and Susie Brown Weiss. Dorothy was the middle of five children.

She outlived her four siblings—Leven Weiss, Catherine Weiss Routt, Marjorie Weiss McKinney, and Herbert Weiss. They grew up on the westside of Detroit on Roosevelt Avenue next to the Gordy family (Barry Gordy).

Dorothy attended public school in Detroit and graduated from Northwestern High School in 1942.

She attended Wayne State University for one year, then dropped out and began working at the Veterans Administration.
On September 10, 1949 she married her longtime sweetheart Albert A. Somerville Jr., a union which produced twin daughters, Paula Denise and Carolyn Marie. She has two grandchildren, Samir Rene Somerville and Karma Sherie Somerville-Powell and one grand son-in-law, Jon Somerville.

Dorothy and Albert were married for 69 years, until Albert's death in 2018.
With the birth of her daughters, Dorothy became a stay-at-home mother until 1966.

She began working for the Detroit Public Schools, first as a lunch aide, then as a secretary at various schools and eventually retired from her alma mater in 1988.

Dorothy was devoted to her family and community. She was a longtime member of the Junior Dorcas Society, a grassroots service organization that did volunteer work and raised money for various charitable causes. She also served as a scout leader in her daughters' Girl Scout troops and did other volunteer work for the Girl Scout Council.
Although Dorothy grew up in the Baptist Church, she joined St. Cyprians Episcopal Church in Detroit and was an active member for many years.  Eventually she and Albert began to attend St. Matthews – St. Joseph Episcopal Church until her health declined.
Dorothy was an excellent cook and was well-known among family and friends for her Christmas holiday cookie tin. She spent days making her assortment of cookies, boxing them in tins, and sending them out all over the country. Anyone on her cookie list looked forward to receiving her package of cookies every year and made sure to return to her the tin can so that they could be sure to receive another batch of cookies the following year.

Dorothy and Albert enjoyed traveling in the United States and abroad and traveled to France, Spain, Morocco, and Japan and going on cruises.  A devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers, she listened to the games on her little transistor radio catching every game.
Most important to her were all of her friends and family members whom she would devote hours on the phone talking to. She especially enjoyed attending family reunions where she would re-unite with family members who lived outside of Michigan.

A humble and proud woman, Dorothy was generous in spirit and loved by all. She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughters, Paula and Carolyn; her grandchildren, Samir and Karma, her grand son-in-law, Jon, and many nephews, nieces, godchildren, and friends.
