OBITUARY for CAROLE J. MCCOLLOUGH

Dr. Carole Joyce McCollough was born on November 26, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan, to William Henry McKissack, Jr., and Mary Louise (Spence) McKissack. She departed this life to join the ancestors December 1, 2023. She was the second of five children. After being one of the first two African-Americans to graduate from Mumford High School (her sister Loretta Ann McKissack being the other one), she earned an undergraduate degree and teaching certificate from Eastern Michigan University, a masters degree and PhD in library and information science from Wayne State University and the University of Michigan respectively. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was active with the Links, and the Northland Gardens Community Association.

Dr. McCollough was a retired associate professor and former dean of the Library and Information Science program at Wayne State University, an auxiliary faculty, trainer, and curriculum committee member for the Children's Defense Fund. In this capacity, she conducted workshops for college interns training to run summer literacy (Freedom School) programs. She served as chair of both the Coretta Scott King Book Award Committee and jury. She served on the Library boards of Southfield Public Library, Southfield, Michigan, and the Langston Hughes Library, Clinton, Tennessee.

Our beloved "Nana" was preceded in transition by her husband Dr. John Henry McCollough (Dr. Pops), her daughter Leah Camille McCollough, and three of her siblings (Loretta Ann McKissack Washington, William Ross McKissack, and Michael Allen McKissack). She is survived by her brother Carl Gregory McKissack, her two sons John Spencer McCollough and Douglas Elliot McCollough (Angela Abram), nine grandchildren Krysty Swann (Ilya Tsinis), Jacquelyn Bland Dorman (Marcus Dorman), Elsie Swann, Charity McCollough, Rachel McCollough, Malcolm McCollough, Ras McCollough, Alina McCollough, Kendall McCollough, three great grandchildren Marcus Dorman, Jr., Cameron Dorman, Rhylan McCollough), and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Carole was beloved by friends from all over the world. She influenced leaders in the field of Library Science and Children's Literature for decades, and delivered old-school "home training" to everyone whose lives she touched. She will be missed deeply and more importantly, her example will be emulated for generations to come.
