THE OBITUARY

Ulysses (U. S.) was born on Sept 2, 1939 in Columbus, Mississippi. He was the eldest of two children born to the late Ulysses S., Sr. and Arabella E. Johnson. In 1945, the family moved to Chicago, Illinois where he developed his musical talent while attending Pilgrim Baptist Church. The church pianist gave him piano lessons and he had quite an ear for music. He transitioned from the piano to the saxophone and played in a number of groups for church, and school talent shows, then as an adult in the Air Force. After retirement, he travelled in his RV and entertained at resorts and FMCA events all over the country.

In the sixties, while attending Northern Illinois University he met Eurise Joseph and they were married in 1961. Through this union, they had a daughter Cathleen (Cathy).

After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, and was stationed in Wichita, Kansas, where he served for four years.

His professional career consisted of selling Real Estate, managing Urban Renewal Programs for the cities of Wichita and Highland Park, Michigan. He started his own general contracting company USJ Construction, Co. which he operated for more than 25 years. He also worked as a building inspector for the cities of Detroit and Oak Park, Michigan.

Anyone that met U. S. could recognize his outgoing personality and matter of fact wit. He never minced words and you could count on him telling you what he thought. He was a wealth of information on anything from music to cars to building construction. Many of you will never forget his red Corvette which was his pride and joy.

Succumbing to several sudden heart attacks, U. S. passed away on Friday, June 26, 2009 at Providence Park Hospital in Novi, Michigan.

He leaves to cherish his memories: wife, Eurise; daughter, Cathy (Bruce); his mother Arabella E. Johnson; sister, Marvouneen A. Clemons; and a host of nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, cousins and friends.
